Points of Contact

Points of Contact

“Points of Contact” is a performance with two feedback loops; one inside a cage and one outside. In this work, the performer explores the boundaries formed by a cage around his head, and forms acoustic feedback loops by creating points of contact between physical objects that are equipped with transducers and contact microphones. This work is a continuation of an ongoing research about the ways in which one can observe vibration as it passes through a field of objects.

The setup for this performance includes a bird cage that hangs from a 2-meter height, while a performer sits under the cage with his head inside, a wearable microphone set attached to his body, and a controller in front of him. There are also spring sets in front of the cage, and the performer creates acoustic feedback loops between pairs of transducers and contact microphones by placing loose pieces of spring between them.

The performance lasts between 10 to 15 minutes.

equipment provided by the artist:

  • Laptop + sound card
  • stereo amplifier + transducers + contact microphones
  • spring sets and objects

equipment provided by the venue:

  • PA: stereo with sub woofer – connection: 2 x mono balanced 1/4″ TRS jack
  • lighting on the performer and the set
  • power: 5 x euro plugs
  • a stool or chair – 60~75 cm high
  • small table for laptop, sound card and a small amp

the facility of the other

The facility of the other is the title of an interactive sound installation that turns the act of listening into a collaboration, by exposing layers of its multi-layered composition based on the number of its listeners.

One can hear the composition by holding a metal bowl against sets of double springs that are stretched on stands throughout the exhibition space. The composition is transmitted through the metal springs in form of mechanical vibration and is amplified inside the bowl, and so one has to put one’s face inside the metal sphere to hear the piece. Moreover, as the metal bowl connects the two springs in each set, it triggers a corresponding layer of the composition to be added to the sound that is being heard throughout all springs.

By pushing one’s face inside a confined metal sphere, The Facility of The Other first detaches one from the other, then amplifies the presence of the other by revealing more of its content as others join. By linking a solitary action to a group experience, this work invites one to appreciate the act of perceiving that is done by the other.

The installation consists of stands holding double springs and fitted with transducers. Their lengths vary between 1 to 2 meters, and one central computer will be set up and covered at site with cables running to each spring set. Moreover, metal bowls of 40 cm diameter will be available by each spring set for audience to hold while listening to the piece.

required components provided by artist:

  • sets of double springs
  • 1 laptop + micro-controller board
  • data cable and audio cable
  • audio amplifiers
  • transducers
  • metal bowls

required equipments/service provided by the venue:

  • Single on/off switch operator
  • Power extensions and power strips

November Music 2015

November Music 2015

This year I will be participating in November Music Festival at Het Kruithuis in Den Bosch with Notesaaz and a version of Vibroplasm named Vibro-Panning.
Vibro-panning is an interactive installation exploring active perception. It consists of acoustic feedback loops that only close when they are listened to, creating a tactile and sonic experience where one holds in her hands a part of the sound creating apparatus, and navigates through the feedback landscape. Vibro-panning invites the audience to observe a vibratory phenomenon as it undergoes changes caused by the act of observation.
